You know the story of A Christmas Carol’s Ebenezer Scrooge, but whatever happened to his even “scroogier” business partner, Jacob Marley? Chained and shackled, Marley is condemned to a hellish eternity — that is, unless he can save the soul of Ebenezer Scrooge. In this one-man show, a desperate Marley sets out on a journey of laughter and redemption. This irreverent and deeply moving story retells the Charles Dickens’ classic with warmth and hilarity.

Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof’s universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness.

George Orwell’s 1984 by Aquila Theatre @ Sangre de Cristo Arts Center

As our modern world grapples with the threats and benefits of technological integration, Aquila Theatre’s production of 1984 provides a space to appreciate the value of individual thought – an evocative and timely narrative of personal freedom against political repression. Today, Orwell’s prescient story resonates around the globe as individuals, systems, and governments clash. 1984 is a classic by one of literature’s most significant authors and provides the kind of evocative and innovative storytelling that suits Aquila’s bold, ensemble driven, physical style.

One of the first questions when casting a Broadway musical is that of type — does the performer’s gender, age, race, and look match that of the character? It doesn’t matter if you can sing the hell out of that character’s songs — if one or more of those type tags don’t match up, your chance of being cast is “unlikely”. But for this cabaret, we’re singing those songs that we’ll never get hired to sing. Boys will sing girls’ songs; girls will sing boys’ songs – and that’s just the beginning! The Best Party in Town returns again to Charlie Dwellington’s for a night of powerful singing and hilarious results!
